NWBD: Change of location for Sep 14 workshop

September 5th, 2008

The location of the Elizabeth Mahina workshop on Sun afternoon
Sep 14 in Olympia has been changed - the workshop will take
place at the Woman’s Club located at 1002 Washington St SE,
Olympia.  If you need directions please contact Kashani via
mas-uda.com.  THANKS

The complete info on the weekend’s events follows —

Saturday — Sep 13 - Lacey WA
You can schedule private and semi-private lessons with Elizabeth
Mahina of She’enedra Tribal, Los Angeles Pricing — Private
lessons are $50 an hour, semi private lessons would be $60/2
students.  and a small class of 3-5 people would about $20
each.  These lessons will cover different material from the
Sunday workshop.  If you haven’t tried ATS before, you may want
to schedule time on Saturday to learn some basics.  Lessons will
take place at Mas Uda Studio, SE of Lacey.  Please contact
Kashani to schedule lessons with Elizabeth.

Saturday evening - Olympia - sign up now for a dance slot!!
Andrea of Wild Honey Tribal Belly Dance and Kashani of Mas Uda
are co-hosting a hafla to raise funds for the Eagles Save our
Building Fund.  Hafla will take place on the top floor of the
Eagles building.  All proceeds from the hafla will go to the
Eagles building fund.  Help save and restore this old building
that has been such a huge part of downtown Olympia for so long!!

Date - Saturday Sep 13

Time - 7:00 until 9:00 or 10:00 (will depend on sign ups for the
hafla slots)

Cost - suggested donation is $5-10 per person (including dancers)
- if you are able to give more that’s wonderful!

Location - the upstairs dance room of the Eagles Building,
located at  805 4th Avenue East, Olympia WA 98506

The room is fairly small, so this event is designed to be an
informal and ‘low key’ hafla.  The ’stage’ area will be somewhat
small also and will be on the same level as the audience.  The
event will sell out.  Spacing will be VERY tight if you are a
large troupe.  We have in mind doing this event somewhat
regularly and will be in a larger venue next time, so please
bear with the space constraints this first time around.

The beneficiary of the event is the Eagles Save Our Building
Fund - the building needs a fair amount of work and, of course,
everything is costing more, so please come out and support us
in attempts to revitalize this landmark building.

Elizabeth Mahina of She’enedra Tribal (Los Angeles) will be the
final dancer of the evening.  Kashani is sponsoring Elizabeth
in workshop on Sun Sep 14 and she will dance at Great Cuisine of
India on Sunday evening - contact Kashani for more info.

To sign up for a dance slot - e-mail Kashani - berubej@comcast.net
with the following information

soloist (8 minutes), duet (8 min)or troupe (10)?

name (as you want it announced) (some clues for pronunciation, if
needed)

Where are you from

A very SHORT introduction about you

Your e-mail address

Your phone number in case e-mail doesn’t work

You should receive a reply e-mail from Kashani with your dance
time - most likely within a week of contacting her.  If you
don’t hear back, after one week, call her at 360-459-3694.
PLEASE don’t call sooner than one week after sending your info.

All music must be on CD, starting with track 1, no stops or
pauses, please record it to play all the way through.

NOTE - Kashani will be at Mezdulene’s retreat teaching over the
weekend 5-8 - won’t be able to reply then, so give me a little
extra time if your request comes in then.

SUNDAY Sep 14, 3:00-5:00 at Shakes Dance Center
$35 ($25 before Sep 8)
workshop with Elizabeth……….
ELIZABETH MAHINA of She’enedra Tribal.

          Exploring Dynamics
This workshop’s focus is on layering, from a soloist to a large
troupe.  Explore techniques and concepts that are
multifunctional to add depth to any performance.  We will cover
formations, grouping and cannons, mirroring and traveling.
Working with short combos that can be multi-layered and give off
that choreographed  look.  Exercises in stage presence and
expression will also be explored.  for more info on Elizabeth,
see www.she-enedra.com

Oasis Dance Camp Update:

It is hard to believe it is September and that October and
Oasis Dance Camp are right around the corner! I’ve learned some
exciting news that I just have to pass on : )!

Cassandra, from Minneapolis, will be teaching a Flamenco-Arabic
fusion choreography to “Rona” by Alabina. Cassandra is an
internationally acclaimed dancer and teacher and Artistic
Director of Jawaahir Dance Company. She is highly respected as a
dancer and artist by Simon Shaheen, Mahmoud Reda,
Raqia Hassan, and many others. www.jawaahir.org

Habiba, from Philadelphia, will be teaching a new “kick-ass”
Folkloric Tunisian choreography that can be done as a scarf or
pot dance-so bring 2 scarves! She hopes to also teach a short
Andalusian choreography to a medieval song sung in Spanish and
Arabic -”Sabes Ya Mio Amor”. Habiba is a leading researcher of
the dances of Egypt and Tunisia and teaches contemporary styles
as well as the traditional folkloric dances that have been
performed and passed down for many years. www.habibastudio.com

I will be teaching a new class “Learn the Basics” for beginners.
I will lead this group through four days of intensive basic
training in the Cassandra style of Oriental Dance including a
short choreographed dance. You may arrive a ‘newbie’ but you
will leave dancing!

And our former and wonderful cook, Sheree, is returning after a
year hiatus.
Yeah!

Dancers of all levels - beginner through professional - will
enjoy these four days of dance with morning technique classes
and afternoon choreography classes.  Additional activities
include: Henna party, Video night, drum classes, participant
show, fashion show, and impromptu skits! Oasis fosters an
extraordinary atmosphere of camaraderie and learning that
combines into four days that will leave you inspired and
invigorated - Oasis Dance Camp, truly a dancer’s oasis!

NWBD: Improv & Beg.II classes w/Dahlia

September 4th, 2008

Come join me for the end of the summer and into fall at
Visionary Dance Productions Studio in Fremont, Seattle.  It’s a
wonderful, gorgeous, warm studio where everyone is welcome.

See the new studio/calendar page here:
http://www.visionarydance.com/bellydancecalendar.html

…………………………………………….
BEGINNING II: “Putting it all together” (6 weeks)

Wednesday Nights

Time 6:15-7:30
Dates: Sept 17, 24 Oct 1, 8, 15, 22
Cost: $80, $75 with 3 day Advance
Drop-ins $15 cash $18 check

Dahlia’s beginner sessions normally start from scratch. But this
time around she will build upon the basic repertoire; taking
you into more complex movements and combinations such as figure
8s, Arabics, camels, undulations and more. These movements,
along with the basic Egyptian core steps, will facilitate
natural traveling and more complex combos. If you are brand new
to belly dance, please take one of Delilah’s beginner classes
this session. But if you’re looking for something a little more
challenging this fall, please come join Dahlia’s Beginner II
class!

Registration/info link is at the bottom of this message.
…………………………………………………..
INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED: “Improvisation & Music Interpretation”

Wednesday Nights

Time: 7:45-9:00
Dates: Sept 17, 24 Oct 1, 8, 15, 22
Cost: $80, $75 with 3 day advance
Drop-ins $15 cash $18 check

Improvising does not need to be intimidating! It is not this
daunting task so many dancers fear! Improv is in each of us.
Every cell of our bodies know how to do it, we just have to
TRUST. Dahlia is an expert at improvising and music
interpretation. This six-week session will gently guide
intermediate and advanced dancers through the “letting-go” and
“trusting the self” process. With handouts and exercises,
students will help students feel more confident and inspired to
interpret new music and move freely to the old. Each student is
asked, in advance, to bring one piece of music that MOVES them.
It does NOT have to be belly dance music. Anything will do!

How to register
Please download and print our registration form, fill it out
and send it inwith a check. We also have a mail slot on the
studio far door. Sorry, we do not take credit cards for classes.
