Pride Parade: call for dancers and musicians

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

I’m wondering if there are enough interested belly dancers and
musicians to put a group together for the June 24 Pride Parade in
downtown Seattle.

The route is 1.2 miles on Fourth avenue from Union St to the Seattle
Center. If you’ve ever been to the Pride parade, you probably noticed
that it needs more dancers and musicians (and fewer trucks with bad
sound-systems). This is the first year that cash prizes will be
awarded (up to $2,000!) for the best marching groups and floats.

Dancers: You’d need to commit to three weekend rehearsals in June (on Capitol Hill)  and be able to buy a $35 silk veil. The marching formations and veil combos would be simple and appropriate for any dancer with some experience and in good physical health.

Musicians: You’d need to commit to two weekend rehearsals in June (on Capitol Hill). We defiantly need a few drummers who can walk and play at the same time, plus anyone else who wants to join (ney? rain stick?).

Any prize money, less the entrance fee, would be split evenly among
participants.

Introduction to Arabic Percussion with Erik Brown

How exciting is this? Erik Brown of the renowned House of Tarab will be in OUR house!
Anyone can learn to drum! Drumming is an affordable and fun way to stay mentally focused, burn energy and improve coordination.  Erik’s style of teaching is helpful, precise and based on classical technique. Learn the basics of Arabic rythm while maintaining proper posture and positioning of your body. You might be surprised at how quickly you can become comfortable and feel great satisfaction in drumming.  This is also an opportunity for belly dancers to develop their understanding of Middle Eastern rythms essential to belly dance. We invite you to come experience the joy of drumming!

More about Erik Brown…
Already an accomplished musician, Erik discovered Middle Eastern rythmns and music in 2001. Since that time he has dedicated his time and energy towards the intensive study of this art form.  Erik has studied closely with some of the great master percussionists, such as Suhail Kaspar, Uncle Mafufo, Layne Redmond and Mustafa Al Kediary. He performs as a member of the House of Tarab, as well as working closely with many Seattle area belly dancers.
