NWBD: Turkish Roman Workshop with Helene Eriksen, July 5-6, 2008 Seattle

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Turkish Roman (Gypsy) Dance in 9/8 Rhythm with Helene Eriksen
Sat/Sun. July 5 & 6, 2008
Seattle
Skin Deep Studios Ethnic Dance Lab,
Beacon Hill
Sat. 11:30-2:30 and 3:30-6:30,
Sun 11:00-2:00 and 3:00-6:00

Please note I have changed the date of this workshop to not
conflict with the Iranian Festival in Seattle.

Turkish Roman is a wonderful improvised dance form in a special
variant of 9/8 with a rich
vocabulary of torso isolations, gestures and cool weight changes.
Learn the basic structure
behind this incredible dance. Discover how it is similar yet
different from Karşılama. We will learn basic rhythm
notation, listen to many different music examples (a study CD
will be available), see videos of Roman in different context…
from the Mahalla to the night club stage.
9/8 will never confound you again! This is an intensive workshop
with 6 hours planned each
day for a total of 12 hours. This class is open to both men and
women.

Helene Eriksen is a international touring artist and dance
ethnologist who has been involved with dances of the Balkans and
Orient for over 30 years. Helene has conducted research in
Bulgaria, ex-Yugoslavia, Romania, Greece, Turkey and Armenia as
well as many other countries. She lived in Bulgaria for over a
year, studying at the Plovdiv Dance Academy, followed by 6 months
in Turkey as a guest of the Turkish State Folk- dance Ensemble.
She has also had the opportunity to work with some of North
America?s and Europe?s finest musicians. Helene also leads yearly
music and dance study tours to Istanbul…a perfect place to
further your practical knowledge of 9/8! This April in Istanbul
she was asked to collaborate with the Roma musician Balık
Ayhan and the dancer Ahmet Öğren for a special Roma music
and dance program on Star TV.
