NWBD: Performance Class

The 7 part Cabaret Routine
taught by Delilah

Description:
In the 60, 70’s and 80’s there was such a thing called the 7
part cabaret routine. Dancers performed them nightly and some
times 2 -3 times a night. They were 15 minutes to 45 min in
length. This qualified them as athletes in my book. Not one
hair was dry on their heads.
Today our world has gone through many changes our attention
span has brought us to an often sound bite mentality. Thus most
dancers only get the opportunity to do a 5-10 minute dance
performance. There is a difference in the psychic state the
dance performer gets into and takes her audience when she
dances a longer set. We will talk about it and explore it. We
will also explore how the 7 part routine can hold holds an
esoteric meaning than just eye candy. It can be a rites of
passage and rich soul candy for a neighborhood temple priestess
of today. The number SEVEN is a personal growth number so for
those dancers desiring more depth to their belly dance
experience this is the class for you.
In this course we will work on the classic 7 part belly dance
routine in 7 classes. Then a solo recital for those who want
to perform the entire dance on Saturday Feb 28 th at 3:00
You need to have a basic working knowledge of belly dance
techniques but it doesn’t have to be mastered or expert by any
means. You work with the skills you know and then pretend you
are a belly dancer and prepare for adventure. (We become what
we practice pretending)
In this class we will work with traditional belly dance
costumes. Dancing in a costume with the appropriate delayed
lines of skirts, beads, coins and fringe is different than
tights and a hip scarf.
For this class you will need these things
Equipment:
A Belly Dance Costume, Bra and /or vest, belt skirt or harem
pants and 3 yard veil. You will need to have your own because
we expect you will want to practice between classes. It does
not have to be fancy.
Jan 6th Part 1. Entrances and introductions
Jan 13th Part 2. Removing the veil and dancing with air.
Jan 20th, Part 3. Fast hips and excitation!
Break while D’s in Hawaii
Feb 3rd Part 4. Slow taxims with floor work or alternatives.
Feb 10th Part 5. Transition from earth to sky and slow to fast
Feb 17th Part 6. Drum Duet; a dancer and a drummer.
Feb 24th Part 7. Last dance and graceful exits.

Recital will be on Saturday February 28th 3:00pm for those who
want to perform a full routine and invite friends.

Date: Jan 6, 13, 20 (skip 27) Feb 3, 10, 17, 24
