NWBD: CARPET CARAVAN arrives at Ottoman Trading Company March 1

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

This is short notice..but you are invited to our fourth annual
Carpet Caravan, Sunday, March 1st, from 10am-7pm, at the Ottoman
Trading Company in Bothell.

Our friend from Turkey, Murat Terzi, just arrived in town with
lots of great Anatolian carpets.

Prices for these carpets will be outstanding, as Murat does not
wish to ship any of his inventory back home when he leaves.

That said, please come even if you are not in the market.  Murat
will be happy to show his unique carpets from all over Turkey even
if you are simply feasting your eyes.  This will be a great
opportunity to experience the essence of the Grand Bazaar, learn
about the various regions of Turkey, and make a Turkish friend
who will surely show his hospitality if you ever travel to his
area of Turkey, Cappadocia.land of the Fairy Chimneys.

I have many items in her shop on CLEARANCE, including the Palace
Lamps which will be 20% off that day only.

I wish to show Murat, at least a busy, social day, so please come
on out to say HELLO, and treat yourself to some textile magic.
If you have friendson your email that you think would enjoy this
day.
please feel free to forward this letter…

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday..Dena…www.ottomantradingco.com

attend these classes!!!  (Directions are at the bottom)

Redmond Athletic Club at 8709 161st Avenue NE, Redmond WA 98052

(near Bella Botega Theater, 1 block from Redmond City Hall and
the Redmond Library)

Level 1 or Level 2 class x 8 weeks = $88
Level 1 and Level 2 = $140 (for one 8-week session)
(you receive a $36 discount for taking both Level 1 and Level
2 in the same 8-week session.)

$15 for a drop in Class

Show up 15 minutes early for the first class so you will have
time to register, and meet others in the class.  I accept cash
or check (no credit cards), payable at the first class.

The classes are an hour long.  We start with stretching, then go
into isolations where we practice moving certain parts of our
bodies without moving others (hip circles, rib cage circles,
hip slides, shoulders, snaky arms, etc.).  Then we learn some
basic moves and combinations.  Then we work on a routine, that
we add on every week, so that by the end of the 8 week session
you have a complete routine that you can practice at home or
show to your family and friends.  It is a very upbeat class -
lots of fun!!!

Wear comfortable clothes that you would normally exercise in.
Skirts are generally not good; unitards, yoga clothes, etc. are
very good.  If you have a hip scarf and dance shoes, bring them,
however, neither are necessary.  I also sell hip scarves in
class and some music.

Learn to Belly Dance with Alexandra Volume 1 (belly dance
instructional video and DVD) – on sale for 19.95 (VHS) or

NWBD: The Tango of the East" TRANSYLVANIAN PARTNER DANCE WORKSHOP

Friday, February 20th, 2009

“The Tango of the East”
TRANSYLVANIAN PARTNER DANCE WORKSHOP

with
Helene Eriksen and Kálmán Dreisziger
Saturday – Sunday
March 21-22, 2009

What to expect: Two days of workshops in Transylvanian Partner
Dances with Helene Eriksen of Seattle and Kálmán Dreisziger from
Montreal. You will enjoy the workshops if you know the basics of
partner dance and love the excitement of a new musical adventure.
Helene and Kalman are patient and experienced dance instructors
who have studied these dances in Transylvania. Transylvania is a
province of Romania with a large Hungarian and Roma minorities.
If you are already experienced in Eastern European dance you will
be exposed to new dances and if you are new to this type of
dancing you will explore this rich musical and dance heritage and
take back some skills to your partner dancing. The band Forras,
from Vancouver, will be playing live music for part of the
Saturday and Sunday Workshops.

More about the dances: During the Renaissance a new, exciting
and highly improvised couple dance fashion swept over Europe. The
nobility danced it, townspeople copied them and the peasants
eventually danced it and filled it with life. Bruegel painted it,
Dürer and deBry reproduced it in detail and preachers damned it.
Wondrously these dances have survived until today in an out-of-
the-way corner of Europe. Romanians, Hungarians and Roma in
approximately 30 villages around the city of Cluj in Western
Transylvania preserved and polished these traditions and
developed them into the most complicated and elegant of couple
dances. The Roma, as well as the Romanians and Hungarians, who
live in Transylvania, dance an exciting dance cycle
which includes couples dances and men’s exhibition dances.

Instructors:Helene Eriksen is a teacher and choreographer of
traditional dances of the Balkans and Islamic Orient. She
lectures and publishes on dance ethnology and costume studies.
She studied Dance Ethnology at the University of California,
Los Angeles (UCLA) and was later a doctoral candidate in
Folklore, Slavistics and Turcology Göttingen, Germany. She
directed her own ensemble Raqs-e Hilal for several years in
Germany and is currently directing her new project, Helene
Eriksen’s Traditional Dance Theater, in Seattle. Helene is in
demand world wide for dance workshops and when not touring
resides in Seattle. She is an extraordinary partner dancer and
appreciates the needs of dancers.
More information is on her website:
www.helene-eriksen.de
Kálmán Dreisziger is an Hungarian folkdance expert, researcher, and
choreographer, and has been the director of several Hungarian
performing ensembles. He is also an advertising executive working in
Dubai. Marjorie Nugent of Seattle describes Kálmán as a gracious,
comfortable, thoughtful and intelligent instructor. His instruction is
superbly crafted.

Prerequisite: Confidence with partner dance basics.
Workshop Times: three 1.25 hr workshops Saturday and Sunday.
10am 3:30 pm.
Cost and Registration Details:Advance registration strongly
encouraged. $115 for the weekend workshops and the Saturday
Dance. Workshops only = $105. Registration on March 18th and
after = $140 if space available. For cancellations March 17th
and before there will be a $20 handling fee. No refunds for
cancellations March 18th and after. All registrations and
cancellations must be made through the Northwest Dance Office.

Advance registration and prepayment is strongly encouraged, as
we will attempt to keep a reasonable balance of leads and follows.

you to sign up with a partner (one lead and one follow) to
ensure admission. This need imply nothing beyond a
registration convenience, since dancers change partners
throughout the day.
