NWBD: Parade – April 25/Olympia

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Olympia is known for some funky happenings.  Procession of the
Species parade is one of the most fun.  We have a small group of
drummers, but would LOVE to have more.

Mas Uda took part in the parade last year and we plan to do it
again this year.  It takes place in downtown Olympia on Saturday
afternoon April 25.  The event began in celebration of earth
day and is divided into sections/elements (fire, earth, air,
water).  We will be in the ‘air’ section.    The Procession
allows only acoustic music and there is no written word.  We
plan to use two rhythms, beledi and chiftitelli, although another
4/4 rhythm would be nice too.  We have one choreography that we’ll
perform only to zills and Kashani will be available to teach it
to dancers a couple of times in April (Sun afternoon April 12-yes,
it’s Easter, {sorry} at 1:00 at the Procession music space).  For
another piece, we have a pretty easy set of moves using veils or
Isis wings.  This is not a fast moving/marching parade – it
meanders fairly slowly, since there are lots of kids in it and
lots of props (some of which don’t cooperate).  For more info on
the Procession go to www.procession.org and to see Mas Uda in last
year’s parade, go to
http://greenerliving.blogspot.com:80/2008/04/procession-of-species.html
- we’re about 2/3 of the way down the page, two pix and a video.
Costume for the event is anything that resembles an ‘air’ creature
or air itself.  You can paint your face as a bug, bird, butterfly
- use your imagination.

As part of Mas Uda’s annual benefit event the first weekend in
April, we will have a rhythm circle.  The hope is that out of
this circle, we will have a group of folks who’d like to take
part in the Procession.

So, here are the specifics –

Rhythm circle DATE –
10:30-12:00, Sun  April 5
LOCATION –Communications building – Evergreen State College
Bring drums, zills, tambourines, flutes and other instruments
COST — donation of $5-10 (additional donations would be WONDERFUL)
to go toward the overall benefit event for Candlelighters
Childhood Cancer Foundation

Parade DATE — Sat. April 25
LOCATION — Downtown Olympia
COST — 2 cans of food for the food bank

For more information – leave your name, phone number and mailing
address for Kashani at (360) 459-3694, or contact Kashani via
www.mas-uda.com

Casablanca Restaurant

$15 at the door

9:00pm – 12:30am
About Casablanca:
Casablanca is a brand new venue. We are working hard to get this
place going as a new weekend night spot. It has all the componets
to be a great place. A large bar, table seating for about 100,
diverse Moroccan style food (ala cart you don’t have to spend
$25 to eat) average menu price is around $10 bucks and he serves
dinner til close. The seating and dance area is an open rectangle
with fairly stylish decor not plain but not super fancy either.

We have scheduled 3 shows here and will do more if we can get you
all out. Come help us. There are No Places to see regular live
Arabic music and bellydance at a night club environment in
Seattle. We want to change that! As terrible as the service was
at Kolbeh we all miss the atmosphere, dancing and music, Anyone
remember Alladin in Pioneer Square? We need a new place. Come
out and let’s get this place happening. The owner is
inexperienced but he wants to make it work also.
These shows are about dancing, that means you up and dancing
to some H.O.T arabic music. Dance performances at 10:00pm and
11:30pm. The rest of the time is open dance!

Performance: Saturday April 11th @ Spice Box Theater

Star of Gypsy Caravan-Where the Road Bends, Queen Harish comes to
Seattle for exclusive workshops and show.

Gypsy Dances from Rajasthan : Past Perfect & Fast Forward
Queen Harish is like a Classical Indian tapestry come to life. She
exudes feminine sensuality when she dances, and captures the
hearts of all who watch her. Her candle dance ignites imagination
to a far away land of new timeless territories. She swirls and
dances, and you can not look away, nor would you want to. This
amazing performer is a Joy to watch and a pleasure to speak to
in person. She flirts as naturally as the rest of us breathe, and
her eyes draw you into her. Graceful, Strong, and so very
talented, the Queen is everything a performer should be and
more. Men are welcome at this special class.

Hailing
from Jaisalmer, in the desert of Rajasthan, Queen Harish became a
dancer purely instinctively, with a total connection to the rich
ritual and cultural roots of his environment and gossips would
also reveal his serious addiction to watching Bollywood movie.

Harish started
touring the world in 1997, dancing, as early as 18 years old,
featuring on stage with legendary Rajasthani music groups such
as Musafir, Maharaja and later embarked as a solo performer.
Harish literally lived on tour throughout all continents, and
without a pause, he also developed a career in India. This
lifestyle of experiences makes him a remarquable and unique
performer, labelling Queen Harish as the Indian contemporary
performer who has the most deeply rooted cultural traditions,
or, taking it the other way, as the most progressive,
modern and versatile Rajasthani traditional performer !

Queen
Harish, The Dancing, Whirling Desert Drag Queen. Dancer,
Performer, Actor, Choreographer, Teacher of all Rajasthani
dances, Courtly Harem
Mujra, Bollywood and Contemporary Fusions.

Feature in the
American film Gypsy Caravan about the same tour, Indo/French
film Hari Om, US Canadian Bravo Rajasthani Music & dance
documentary and numerous travel programs and performance
broadcast …

NWBD: A REALLY DIFFERENT SHOW!

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Come enjoy a really different show at VDP.
This year the annual “Garden of Allah” should be called something
like the “The Kitchen of Scheherazade” or “Alibaba’s Tavern”.
Yikes! The year this class is doing scents, desserts and
beverages. Really fun! Each member of the audience will be
invited to taste, imbibe, consume, smell a bit of each dancer
muse.
There are only 40 seats $15 each so it’s important to reserve in
advance.
SUNDAY APRIL 19th 7:00 must arrive by 6:45
VDP STUDIO, 4128 Fremont Ave North
The studio is being turned into a mini cabaret with chairs and
mini tables. All the performances will be danced in the round.

The show is a fund raiser for VDP Studios property tax. No, we
don’t own the building but it’s in the lease that we have to pay
the buildings share of taxes $1500 twice a year. Thus, we try to
have fun and fund raising performances and GARAGE SALES to off
set. Speaking of that, we will be doing one of those as well. If
you want to contribute salable items. We thank you. We will be
accepting shortly. Anything helps us stay in business and
recycles stuff back into society.Delilah
