Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Hi all,

Thanks so much for your great response about me coming up and
doing a trunk show!  I didn’t realize that the Souk would be
running that Sun, so have rearranged my schedule to head into
Seattle on that day, instead of Sat!
;~D  Oh Joy!

I’m SO SO SO looking forward to seeing you all and CAN’T wait
for you to see all my new sparklies!  I’m planning to bring
mostly just necklace sets – but let me know if you’re looking
for anything else, specifically, and I’ll bring that along,
too.

See you all at The Souk at Bitterlake Community Center on Sun,
April 19 at 1:00.  ;~D

NWBD: ARABIC-FLEMENCO FUSION WORKSHOPS

Monday, April 6th, 2009

ARABIC-FLEMENCO FUSION WORKSHOPS with Elena Villa
@ Euphoria Studios 1235 SE Division St. Portland  MAY 2nd & 3rd

Workshop descriptions:
Flamenco and Middle Eastern belly dance are very complementary
art forms. Musically, they are historically linked and musicians
and dancers are increasingly exploring ways of fusing these two
inspiring traditions. These workshops are designed for belly
dancers interested in integrating flamenco technique into their
dance. We will focus extensively on posture, upper body, arms,
and hands. We will also work on creating an elegant line and on
incorporating accents with the head, arms, legs, and hips.
Finally, we will venture beyond aesthetics, seeking out the
deeper feeling behind the dance and how we can make our own
experiences part of that expression.

ZAMBRA  Sat. May 2nd  12:00 – 2:00  – A fusion of Arabic and
flamenco dance with roots in Granada, Spain. Traveling steps,
kicks, turn, skirt technique, attitude, line, posture and more!
Please wear a long, full skirt (ruffles are a plus) and bring
your fiery attitude!

FAN DANCE Sun. May 3rd 12:00 – 2:00 – Technique for seamless
fusion of Spanish fan in Oriental dance, plus fan choreography
for “Msafer” by Mohamed Abdel Wahab. Please wear a long, full
skirt of lightweight fabric and bring a fan, Spanish fan
(pericón) preferred. These can be purchased at
www.flamencoclosetcreations.com for $20 and many other sites at
varying prices. There will be several to lend.

Elena Villa first became involved in Middle Eastern Dance as a
young girl in the late 1970s She began studying flamenco in 1991
with several professional teachers, including La Linda and Andrea
“la Canela.” She also received intensive instruction from
international flamenco artists La Tania, Jose Galván, and Teo
Morca, among others. In Sept. 2004, Elena traveled to Sevilla,
Spain where she attended Taller Flamenco, a respected school for
the flamenco arts. Elena combines her intensive flamenco
training and her lifelong involvement in Middle Eastern dance to
bring you a unique fusion of great beauty and integrity..

NWBD: Olympia Belly Dance Newsletter -March, 2009

Monday, April 6th, 2009

March was a busy month, mostly getting ready for our big benefit
event in April.

Mas Uda held another “Sew Fun” event – several of us made pants
and Kimana gave valuable general sewing information in the
process.  See photos on our website – www.mas-uda.com.

A couple of us went to different rhythm circles – a monthly one
at Traditions and a weekly one called ‘Drum Fun’.

Mas Uda performed at the Olympia High School international
dinner.  We really enjoy international and ethnic shows for
the opportunity to show dances and use music from specific
locations and the educational opportunity is wonderful!

Locals danced at the Eagles hafla on Sat March 14 – fun!!
Dancers have raised enough to install heating in the top floor
room.  Wild Honey and Kashani sponsored one in Sep and then The
Project did one in December.  Dancers are really helping the
Eagles improve their building.

Celebration of dance was held on Sun March 22 at the Passage to
India restaurant (810 Sleater Kinney Rd) in Lacey.  Hanan,
Abijah, Kashani, Mas Uda and others danced.  Dancing will
continue at this venue – contact Kashani to sign up for a dance
slot –

Great Cuisine saw Abijah and Yasmin split an evening and Zaheera
also performed.

Kashani is welcoming anyone who wants to dance with Mas Uda and
friends in the Procession of the Species (Sat April 25) to
contact her.  We have some drummers ready to go and Mas Uda as
well as some Tacoma dancers ready to dance.  Sunday afternoons
are open for practices and Kashani will also be teaching one or
more of the choreographies the group will dance, so contact her
to learn these.  Once learned there will be other opportunities
for dancing with Mas Uda members.  It’d be fun to have folks
from several groups dance together.  We’ve done this throughout
the years – most often with Jaleh’s students and with Raks Saah
Rah from Centralia.

A Passage to India is the new dance venue in Lacey.  The first
evening of dance (March 22) was a great success – Mas Uda and
it’s soloists performed along with Hanan and Abijah.  Check the
Passage to India page on Mas Uda’s website for pix.  You will
see that there is a large area suitable for troupes to perform.
We had as many as 6 dancers at once in one area and it worked
well.
Beyond beginner class starts on Wednesdays April 15 – at the
Woman’s club downtonw – a great chance for extra exercise, dance
steps, step combos and review – get a good workout an enjoy it!!
Check with me for details……………..

NWBD: Layali Banat is back!!

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Zulaika’s’ School of Middle Eastern Dance presents Layali Banat
(Girls’ Night) – a women’s party!

Friday, April 24, 2009, 8:30-10PM (short show at 8:35)

Dance Academy of Bellevue, 626 120th Ave. NE, Bellevue

Layali Banat (Arabic for Girls’ Night) is an evening of
hospitality, entertainment, and festivity reminiscent of a
Middle Eastern woman’s party. Bring a snack to share, a beverage
of your choice, and a pillow for sitting on the floor. The
evening will start with a short performance featuring Zulaika
and guests followed by open dancing to CDs of popular Arabic
tunes.
Zulaika will provide a short dance lesson for women new to the
dance to join in the fun!

Bring your girlfriends and experience the dance in the setting
of its roots – women celebrating with each other!

NWBD: Any interest in Shiny Sparkly Things! trunkshow?

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Hi all,

Checking in to see if there’s any interest in me bringing up all
my gud stuff for a Shiny Sparkly Trunk show on Sat April 18?? I
missed seeing a lot of you at Rakkasah and won’t be back in the
area until MedFest.? I’ll be coming up that weekend to visit
Jaleh and would love to show you all the yummy things I have
in stock right now!

Please contact me directly at sherribloomer@yahoo.com if you
think you’d come to a showing on Sat, April 18 afternoon-evening
- so I can gauge interest.? It’s expensive to get my stuff up
to Seattle, and I don’t want to plan on taking time away from my
visit with Jaleh unless there is some pretty strong interest.

ALSO, I’m looking for a venue to hold said trunk show.? ;~D? I’d
like to stick around central Seattle, so if you know of a spot,
please let me know.? I’d be able to pay a percentage of sales to
the space owner, so give me a holler if you’re interested.

Thanks so much, Seattle Dancers!?
