NWBD: Suhaila Salimpour 3-Day Level I Intensive in Seattle

Registration is now open for the Suhaila Salimpour 3-Day Level I
Intensive in Seattle!

November 6-8, 2009

Friday,  1-7pm
Saturday,  10am-4pm
Sunday,  10am -4pm *
15 total hours of instruction. Each day will include a 1 hour lunch break.

Cost: $400, $375 if paid in full by September 1.

*Optional Level 1 testing is available after the workshop on Sunday.
Testing costs an additional fee of $150, to be paid at the time of the
test. To undergo testing you must be a current member of the Suhaila
Salimpour School of Belly Dance (SSSBD). Workshop participants may
sign up for membership during the workshop or at the time of the test.
Note that testing fees are paid for a specific testing date and not
refundable/transferable. Please review the required elements for

About the Workshop
This workshop is open to participants of all levels and styles, from
baby bellydancer to pro, tribal, fusion, or cabaret.  Anyone new to
Suhaila’s format, regardless of previous experience, begins in Level
1.

Participants will learn the building blocks of Suhaila unique format
terminology.  Emphasis is placed on muscle awareness and control,
proper alignment, music timing and finger cymbals.

Why attend?
o        To learn from a master teacher and world renown dancer
o        To learn the basics of Suhaila’s unique format and
terminology with a focus on Level 1 material.
o        To refresh and refocus with the intent to test for Level 1
certification.
o        For the challenge of learning something new and developing
into the best dancer you can be.
o        To refine your technique and accrue required CECs (for
already certified dancers)

To reserve: $200 deposit due by September 1, 2009; balance due
November 1, 2009.   Full cost: $400, $375 if paid in full by
September

Five-Day Intensive for men and women:
Immerse yourself in dance, rhythm and song of North Africa, the
Balkans, the Middle East and Central Asia.

- Learn to connect deeply with rhythm and movement through
singing, dancing and drumming with two deeply experienced artists.
- We will investigate the profound interface between movement and
rhythm from many overlapping traditions ranging from North Africa
to Central Asia.
- Each student will have ample opportunity to explore individual
questions.
- We look forward to celebrating together the glorious music and
dance traditions of these regions.

discover unique self-expression and confidence.

Helene and Rowan have known each other for over 20 years and are
thrilled to be able to offer this special week of music and

HELENE ERIKSEN
Helene Eriksen celebrates 30 years of teaching this year.  She
is an  internationally acclaimed touring artist, choreographer
and teacher of traditional dance from the countries from North
Africa to Central Asia.  Her knowledge is based on years of
field research and collaboration with renowned international
artists.  She has conducted research in Morocco, Algeria,
Tunisia, Egypt, Greece, Bulgaria, ex-Yugoslavia, Romania, Turkey,
Armenia, Georgia and with immigrant communities and artists in
Europe and North America. She leads yearly music and dance
study tours to places like Turkey, Armenia and Morocco. After
living for 25 years in Europe Helene has settled in Seattle in
the beautiful Pacific Northwest where she is deeply involved with
the Northwest Folklife Festival and with directing her ensemble
ANAR: Helene Eriksen’s Traditional Dance Theatre.  To read more

ROWAN STORM
Rowan Storm is recognized internationally for her drum workshops
and Carpet Concerts, singing in several languages, and performances
of traditional Middle Eastern percussion instruments. From 2000
to 2006 Rowan studied and performed dayereh and daff in concert
tours with the great Master of Classical Persian music,
Mohammad Reza Lotfi. Rowan has been living in Greece since 1993,
where she is a leader in the contemporary movement to embrace
shared Oriental heritage. Her performance venues include New
York City?s Lincoln Center, celebrated venues throughout Europe,
ancient amphitheaters of Greece and Cyprus, Istanbul?s Reshid
Rey Concert Hall, as well as countless carpet concerts
throughout the world. Rowan invites you to join her network on

The Rowan Storm Dayereh is an updated version of the traditional

Lake Oswego, ORE. – June 12, 2009 – Belly Dance Power and Passion
Live Show, produced by local dancer, community member and Miss
Belly Dance USA, Sedona Ruiz, is coming to Lake Oswego for one
night only on Monday, June 29.
 
The show will feature 10 world renowned and internationally
acclaimed belly dance performing artists including: Belly
Dancer of the Universe, Dahlia; Las Vegas Belly Dance
Entertainer of the year, Rachel George; Belly Dancer of the
Universe Group Champions, Belly Dance Soulfire; Miss Belly
Dance USA, Sedona Ruiz; New York’s Darshan; East Coast Belly

Nath Keo, a wonderful dancer and teacher in his own right, is
sponsoring Bozenka, for a weekend of workshops and theatre show.

Here’s a summary of the info:

Sat Oct 10      10 am -3 pm     From Andalus to Zaffa:  A
workshop on how to dance to obscure rhythms       
Bozenka will break down and explain these rhythms, which are
often found in classical Egyptian music, but which are
unfamiliar to many dancers.  She’ll teach movement combinations
for each rhythm, including rhumba, vox, samahi, sombati, Darig,
Tunesi, and more.

Sat Oct 10      8 pm    “Ashra” performance at Macpherson
Theatre, featuring Bozenka, Nath Keo, Sacred Dance Center
Company (Nath’s dance company, voted best dance company in
Victoria, in all genres, by Monday Magazine), and special
guests

Sun Oct 11     10 am – 3 pm   Classical Egyptian Technique
and Combinations    Take your dancing to the next level, with
intricate and challenging hip technique that will enhance your
performance.  The class includes special attention to facial

Blood Sister’s Choreography:
Performing offers a myriad of challenges for dancing as a group,
from stage, to dance floor, to crowded restaurants. Using a
combination choreography as well as group improvisation is a
great alternative to deal with these issues. In this workshop,
students will learn some an exciting group choreography from
one of the She’enedra/Sisterhood/Nataraja choreoraphers!

Silk Road Expedition, and performing for President George Bush
(Senior). She has over 10 years of experience in teaching
