AZIZA
Before launching an international career, Aziza (”dear to the
heart” in Arabic) rose to become one of the most cherished belly
dance artists of the Northwest. Frequently performing with MB
Orchestra, she captivated loyal fans with her unaffected
grace, unforgettable smile, awesome skill, and seemingly
effortless ability to simply become the music. This show is a
rare and exciting reunion of Aziza with her Seattle musicians,
and an opportunity to experience the best of what
this art form represents.  www.azizashimmy.com

MB ORCHESTRA
Come ready to get up and groove, because this show includes an
old school Arabic dance party with the Northwest’s premiere
longstanding Middle Eastern dance band. Internationally
renowned oud player Maurice Sadak Rouman, who has been composing
and performing ancient Egyptian “Pharoanic” music for more than
40 years, founded MB Orchestra in the early 70s with his two
sons, Bahaa and George, and son-in-law, Shiham. Because they
couldn’t break up (it’s family), they’ve been together
ever since!  www.themborchestra.com

ELISA GAMAL
An expert show woman, award-winning belly dance artist, sought
after instructor, and board member and vice president of Middle
East Arts International. In 1994, MB Orchestra picked Elisa out
of a student show, inviting her to become one of their house
dancers, after which she performed with them every month for
over a decade.

NWBD: Noruz Community Song and Dance Evening, March 29, 2009 Ballard/Seattle

June 25th, 2009

Dear friends,
I am initiating a new regularly irregular series of events on some
Sunday evenings throughout the year at the lovely Motion and Rest
Studio in Ballard. In March we celebrated Persian New Year and
this coming Sunday we will gather together to discover the
cultures of the West Sahara.

West Sahara Evening, Sunday June 28th, 7:30-9:30 pm (Doors open
at 7)

Studio Motion and Rest
5340 Ballard Avenue NW
Seattle WA 98107
Admission $10, Children 12 and under $5

The community song and dance evenings will be an opportunity
for us to come together to sing, dance simple dances and play
some silly games.  It’s an opportunity to bring your family and
friends and share the celebration of collective voice and
shared movement.  Each evening will have a theme.  This month’s
theme is the Cultures of the West Sahara.  The West Sahara was
formerly a Spanish colony and then divided by the countries of
Morocco and Mauretania, not with out considerable conflict
which is ongoing and unresolved to this day. The peoples of
the West Sahara, the Sahraoui and the Tuareg have an amazing
culture and beautiful music and dance.  Probably the most well
known of them is the trance and blessing ritual called Guedra.
Much less known are the social dances of the area.  In this
evening we will learn about the cultural and political history
of the area with a slide show, watch some dance and music clips
and learn to clap some of the patterns and movements used in
the dances.

Here is some basic information about the West Sahara:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Sahara
Here is a link with films about the Sahraoui:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6la2f_sahraoui-sahrawi_shortfilms

Further Community Song and Dance Evenings will be:

July 19th, 2009 an evening about the power of shared song…
with the screening of a wonderful Swedish movie and singing
together.

August 9, 2009 with guest artist Rowan Storm
in conjunction with my weeklong intensive rhythm and dance
workshop with guest teacher Rowan Storm August 5-9

September 13, 2009 TBA

October 25, 2009 Dalmatian Evening (costal Croatia) with guest
artist Nick Petrish
in conjunction with a Lin?o workshop (couple dance from the
Dubrovnik region) with Nick Petrish Oct. 25
