Al-Arwah
Al-Arwah was formed in September of 2005 and is based in Portland,
Oregon. We are devoted to the music of the Middle East, North Africa,
Turkey, Persia (Iran), and Armenia. Al-Arwah includes Jennifer Foley,
Jerry Fugate, Geoff George, Chris Jacobson, Sean Molloy, Doug Shafer
and Marlene Trigg.

We play a variety of percussion and melody instruments, Jennifer is a
talented multi-instrumentalist who plays hammered dulcimer, harp and
oud. Jerry plays percussion and baglama saz. Chris and Sean play
percussion. Doug plays percussion, oud and guitar. Geoff plays
keyboards and guitar and Marlene plays the violin.

We strive for a clean, acoustic and essentially authentic sound. We
also are committed to being very "dancer friendly". We'd better be, Marlene
is a dancer and two of us are married to dancers!

If you have any questions or would like a demo CD or mp3 clip please
contact us at al-arwah@al-arwah.com or telephone 503-502-8227.

I am offering free drum lessons to anyone interested. There is a catch. I will not travel outside of Bellingham to teach, and you have to catch me when you can. If anyone is interested call me at 360-305-8655. Call me either the day before you wish a lesson, or no more than four days in advance. For those serious enough to deal with my personal schedule, you will learn 12 rhythms, understand proper technique, and will be ready for advanced training in the future. I am not fond of group lessons, so I offer private lessons only. I will also share information between students, so that everyone can gather to practice drumming and jam when they have time.

If you...
*Have never touched a drum before but always wanted to try
*Have had some handdrumming experience, Middle Eastern or otherwise
*Are a bellydancer who wants to understand Middle Eastern rhythms

This class is for YOU!

Details:
Tuesday nights from 7-8pm
Euphoria Studios
1235 SE Division
Portland , OR
Cost: $60 for six weeks or $12 to drop in
*Drums available for loan or purchase* - contact me prior to class

Topics covered:
*Fundamental Technique
*Rhythms played in Bellydance
*Intro to the Drum Solo

This is the class I always wished had been offered while I was studying bellydancing. It is guaranteed to bring a dancer to the next level by internalizing the rhythms on the drum.
My extensive work in teaching music to children and training in Dalcroze Eurhythmics has helped me create a system where I teach the rhythms through movement. I have also developed a series of charts for each rhythm, reducing each rhythm to its essential component and building upon it, so that I can challenge each drummer to learn at his/her own pace.
